The disruption will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, May 10 until Monday, May 13 at 8 a.m.

In a statement, Horizon said the decision was made due to a “lack of anesthesiologist coverage in the event an emergency caesarian section is needed.”

“In order to receive safe and quality care, it is important expectant individuals are aware of this change in service.”

Horizon said even if moms in labour feel they are low-risk and won’t require a C-section, they were still required travel to Fredericton “as emergency situations can quickly arise during childbirth.”

The release said all expectant mothers, 35 weeks pregnant and over, had been contacted by nursing staff, according to Horizon.

Horizon acknowledged the change may be concerning to families and assured patients they will receive safe and quality care at any Horizon facility.

It’s the first time this year such a closure has been announced.
