Man charged with having loaded gun in city's uptown

A 39-year-old man is in police custody following his arrest Friday morning in relation to a firearms investigation.

Saint John police report the man was arrested by the Street Crime Integrated Enforcement Unit just before 11:30 a.m. Friday as undercover officers observed a man in the 100-block area of Charlotte Street in the city’s uptown area.

“The man was carrying a small bag that officers believed contained a firearm,” police stated in a media release.

The man was taken into custody without incident and, police report, found to have a loaded and prohibited firearm. He appeared in court Friday and was charged with possession of a prohibited firearm, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, carrying a concealed weapon and breach of a court order. He was remanded to custody to return to court for a bail hearing Monday.

The Integrated Enforcement Unit (I.E.U.) consists of officers from the Saint John Police, Kennebecasis Regional Police Force, New Brunswick Justice and Public Safety and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.  Their mandate is to target drug trafficking, weapons and organized crime offences.
